The first House of Besserat was founded in 1843 by Edouard Besserat


Edouard Besserat was born in Hautvillers and over the years acquired great expertise in making champagne wines.
In 1843, he decided to produce his own champagne under the Besserat name and undertook to distribute it to the best-known hotels, restaurants and wine shops.
His two sons Victor and Edmond later joined the business and they in turn acquired a passion for good craftsmanship as well as a dedicated commitment to excellence. One was an outstanding winemaker and the other a great taster and talented businessman. Both worked hand in hand to build the name and fame of the House of Besserat.
Later Champagne Besserat pursued its growth and quest for quality, aiming at ever more elegance, finesse and lightness.


Besserat de Bellefon was born of a marriage.
Cuvée des Moines was born of expertise.


In 1927, Edmond Besserat, the grandson, married Yvonne de Méric de Bellefon, a young lady from Champagne, of aristocratic descent.

Their marriage gave birth to the House of Besserat de Bellefon.

Thus a new name in Champagne was born. In 1930, the owner of ‘’La Samaritaine de Luxe’’, a then-famous Paris restaurant, issued Victor Besserat with a challenge : to offer his patrons a champagne with a light sparkle, fine froth, great finesse and specially made to drink through a meal…’’ If you can do it, I will order 1 000 bottles instead of 100 now’’ To meet the request, Victor decided to use the ‘’crémant’’ winemaking technique… and duly secured the market.



Cuvée des Moines, the jewel of the House, had just been born.

Besserat de Bellefon’s Cuvée des Moines then made its appearance on the greatest tables of the time, including ‘’Maxim’s’’, one of the most prestigious, but also Lucas-Carton, La Méditerranée and Prunier.

The quality of the wine, the finesse of its froth, the delicacy of its colour and the lightness of its sparkle were recognized unanimously.

Edmond and Victor could then be justly proud of Besserat de Bellefon’s success. Its name and image continued to wax ever higher with a clientèle of wine specialists such as fine wine sellers, restaurateurs and sommeliers.

Development then required new steps with a view to meet the international ambitions of the House and the Cuvée des Moines Rosé was created in 1972.
